#8 Let's Take a Break - West Glacier, MT

(Don at the satellite clinic in West Glacier)                     (Don in full gear for his Wild River adventure)

On Tuesday at Red Rock Falls, Don had an accident involving his left wrist. The other hikers at the falls were so concerned about him but he didn't seem to think it was a big deal. We finished our hike and put ice on his wrist for the rest of the day. On Wednesday we drove to West Glacier for Don to take a Wild River adventure down the Flathead River. Our first choice of lodging was full, and by God's faithful watchcare, we stayed at a motel in West Glacier. Just 20 feet from the entrance was a sign with a red cross and the word "Clinic." After Don's river ride, we decided to drop by the clinic to check out his hand, which by now was quite swollen. To our relief, not only was the clinic open but they had an x-ray machine. The news was 2 broken bones in the wrist. We were in shock. What to do? Do we go home? Will it be a vacation if we stay? The wonderful staff at the clinic, (we think we should protect their privacy) K, the P.A. and H, the R.N., were very caring and compassionate, going the extra mile in every way. To begin with, K could not believe that Don was not in pain and he asked if all Texans were that tough! He put a splint on Don's arm, and told him not to lift anything heavier than a fork. He even made a "motel call" later when Don's splint needed an adjustment. He arranged for an orthopedic doctor to read the x-rays that evening (through satellite technology) and for Don to see him on Thursday.  H arranged for us to have a CD of the x-rays to take with us. These angels of mercy made our decisions much easier. On Thursday Don kept the appointment with a very capable ortho specializing in sports injuries. He set the bones without surgery and said to follow up in Dallas in a week. So we continued on our journey for another week--enjoying Yellowstone and Helena.
