#43 A "Painted Lady" House - Bridgton ME

We met our friends, Dick and Bev, who live in Bridgton, in 1964. Dick was Don's co-worker at Texas Instruments and told him about the little town of 40,000 where he lived--Garland, TX. We moved to Garland in 1965 and are still here. Dick and Bev moved back to Bridgton a few years later, but kept in touch (this was before emails and internet, too).  It was a dream come true for us to get to see their little town of 4,338 and to re-connect with them. Even after the intervening decades, they were "just folks" and we love them dearly.

This is their home, a beautiful 100 year-old Victorian, with 3 stories and a basement. Bev chose the colors from historical paints in the style of the "painted lady." The term “painted lady” has a double meaning. It is often used to refer to “soiled doves” or fallen women of the Old West, who painted their faces with makeup when respectable women did not wear cosmetics. Houses of that same era painted in a multi-colored scheme are also often referred to as “Painted Ladies.”  I think she is stunning AND respectable.

We enjoyed their hospitality as well, staying in a 2nd story bedroom. The home if filled with antique furniture, fixtures, and quilts. Our wonderful accomodations were polished off with a down comforter to stave off the chilly Maine nights.  It was the best B and B we've ever stayed in.
